Project Origin

Control all your smart kitchen devices

Chefman is all about helping people cook fresh and healthy. They contacted us to redesign their app, ChefIQ. Our job was to transform a recipe app into a full-blown control center for all Chefman devices with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.

On top of that, we had to find a way to introduce users to the modern way of cooking, the Guided Cooking mode.

Project management

Each project can fall apart without some team collaboration tool. Here, we decided to go on with Slack and InVision which worked great together.

Product design

Great results go hand in hand with professional tools. In this case, we needed more than one to achieve the goal.

Team

Jack of all trades

One product designer was assigned to join the design team of Chefman to spark innovation in their team. In close collaboration and daily meetings, they identified problems.

The product designer then prototyped solutions and designed the final look of the app.

Milestones

Redefining the cooking process

How does one cook today? Do we stand by the countertops all the time? If we track progress of every single detail of our live, why don’t we track the cooking progress?

Chefman is on a mission to redefine the cooking process. They believe that you can take advantage of technology and prepare tasty and healthy meals without any effort. And you can control it with an app.

Phase one

Connecting via Bluetooth and WiFi

Chefman equips its devices with Bluetooth and WiFi. To make the most of your kitchen devices, it’s best to connect them to your phone where you can control them and track cooking progress like temperature or pressure or time estimated to finish.

The app can scan your surroundings to find out which devices are active and guides you through the pairing process.

Phase two

Personalised home screen for your kitchen

Once connected, you enter recipes screen, the home of your app. You can even customize it to show only recipes for the devices you actually own.

See trending dishes and suggestions based on the time of day. Or start browsing categories. It’s a recipe book with an overview of your kitchen.

Phase three

Showcase the recipe

Each recipe has a video with a step-by-step instruction. You can choose whether you want to see the video or browse the recipe the traditional way.

Cooking difficulty, time of cooking, tags, description, ingredients, tools used, comments and ratings? It’s all there.

Oh, and you can create a shopping list like a pro!

Challenge

We introduce you Guided Cooking™ mode

The timeline

Numerous iterations ultimately led to a cooking timeline. Each step can be read at any time but only the active step is highlighted and you can see your progress at all times.

Device control, accessible anywhere in the app

Feel free to go back to browsing recipes while you cook. The cooking status is always accessible from the bottom bar. Pause or play or even delay timer in your Chefman device at any moment.

Yes, you can do it while you sit on your couch watching Netflix.

Outcome

One small step for kitchens, one big step for the future of IoT

Modern technology advanced the kitchen appliances and tools but it never advanced the cooking process itself like this before. Chefman is excited about what future brings and we’re just as excited about how we can contribute to the future of Internet of Things.

They completely blew us away with their design skills.

7ninjas did UI/UX redesign on several features for an app. They delivered designs in Sketch for features including a calculator, a guided cooking option, and an interface connecting multiple devices.
